Earlier this week I went to a session of Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis and guest of honor Vera Wang held at the 92Y. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing so much about Vera's life and how she got to be where she is now. Seeing a designer of her stature and years of experience speak candidly about her life was definitely on of the best learning experiences I've had since moving here.
Five things I learned about Vera:
* It was her father's idea to design wedding dresses
* Her dream was to be an olympic figure skater
* She went to Sarah Lawrence and Columbia but still had to take a typing class for Vogue
* She would like design sports wear
* David La Chapelle took her wedding photos
Of course she gave some advise for new designers from her life:
* Work for someone you admire
* Work for someone that will pay to train you
* Make priorities, everyday try not to be hysterical
